Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district got shocked and delivers an enthralling news about an SBI branch scam. A fraudulent bank, acting like a real State Bank of India (SBI) branch has been found defrauding job-seekers. This fake branch, well-equipped with banners and hired staff, was operating as an authentic SBI branch and scammed people with fake recruitment offers. This was after a series of police inquiries were launched in response to complaints laid by State Bank of India officials.

Discovery of the Fake SBI Branch

It was when the branch of this so-called SBI is located in the Chhapora village of the Sakti district that SBI officials suspected some strange activities. Complaints were made at the Malkharoda police station, which resulted in inquiries and uncovered the fraudulent activities. According to the police reports, the branch recruited five individuals and all these five were appointed through what is known as fake appointment letters. What’s so interesting about these employees is that they were taken for training without knowing it was actually a scam.

In an attempt to leave the scene before the police even reached there, the accused had already left behind the fake documents and equipment, which had already brought suspicion over him. Once he was caught by the police, it was confirmed by SDOP Sakti – Manish Kumar Dhruv that they found a forged seal and false documents that claimed to be issued from the SBI Regional Office at Raipur. Computer systems and hard drives from the said false branch were also taken by the police for further investigation

Victims of the Scam

It primarily targeted job seekers, promising false recruitment opportunities and extracting huge sums of money from the victims. The victims were recruited under impression that they have been recruited to SBI, which was later found to be false. Among these fraud victims are Sangeeta Kavar of Korba, who was cheated of Rs 2.5 lakh, and Lakshmi Yadav, another victim from Korba, who lost money amounting to Rs 2 lakh. The last one is Pintu Maravi from Kawardha, who paid Rs 5.8 lakh. Another fraud victim is Parmeshwar Rathore from Korba, who was duped of Rs 3 lakh.

Role of Intermediaries and Accused

According to police reports, the scam involved three main individuals who are at large presently. The scamsters had put up the fake branch to lure people for jobs in SBI. According to police two collecting agents, Rekha Sahu from Korba and Mandhir Das, are said to be in touch with the accused who had collected money from the victims.

Despite the massive cheating, no original banking documents were found at the fraudulent branch. The Chhattisgarh Police have filed an FIR against the accused under several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 3(5), 318(4), 336, 338, and 340. The Police are continuing to trace the accused.

Rears of Banking Frauds Coming Up in Chhattisgarh

The newest scam being banking fraud surfacing in the region. There is a rise in fake branch and recruitment scams, and the authorities are putting out a word of warning to job seekers. People must be on their toes, as the jobs offer now involves huge amounts of money. One of the scams that surfaced in the region in the course of years was Chhattisgarh banking fraud questioning the safety of the financial operations and job offers.

Above and beyond this fraud branch operation, Ajay Kumar Agrawal, a senior official of SBI, cautioned people against such duplicate banking and advised report the matter accordingly. Such fraudulent tricks erode the trust of the citizens upon financial institutions and damage the good name of genuine branches like the SBI kiosks that are functioning in Chhattisgarh.

Chhattisgarh Police reaction and continued probe

In an action against the recent scam incident, the Chhattisgarh Police is actively pursuing the case. The police teams are working their way to identify and apprehend the perpetrators who conned the people in this scam. Police also suspect that this is one among the many small fraudulent branch operations in the state. Officials have appealed to the public to provide any other information available on the scam.

Even the State Bank of India has come forth with a statement. In this, the bank requests all its customers and even job aspirants to verify the department or recruitment issue before paying a single penny. SBI maintains that proper details of official branches and recruitment procedures are available on the website of the bank which can thus be verified through proper official sources as well.

The SBI branch scam in Chhattisgarh brings back memories of how important due diligence is in matters of job offers and operations within banking. It is only due vigilance, as the Chhattisgarh Police investigations guarantee, that can help avoid such scams from befuddling job-seekers and the public at large. The fraudulent operations deprived the innocents of much-needed funds but at the same time enriched the fraudulent operations and disgraced legitimate banking systems such as the State Bank of India.

It is reported that authorities are requesting public assistance in notifying any suspicious activity, while the SBI tried to pass on the word regarding false recruitment and some fraudulent branches. With more effort on both sides-by law enforcers and financial institutions-there’s still hope that something of this sort might be prevented in the future.
