JK Assembly Polls: Congress Releases First Candidate List Following Alliance with National Conference

The Congress party has announced its first list of nine candidates for the upcoming Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Assembly elections. The list, released late Monday, features several prominent leaders, including party general secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, who will contest from the Dooru constituency. This marks a significant step in Congress’s preparation for the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, which are set to begin on September 18, 2024.

The candidate list also includes former state unit chief Vikar Rasool Wani, who has been fielded from the Banihal constituency. Other key candidates include Surinder Singh Channi for Tral, Amanullah Mantoo for Devsar, Peerzada Mohammad Syed for Anantnag, Shaikh Zafarullah for Inderwal, Nadeem Sharief for Bhadarwah, Sheikh Riyaz for Doda, and Pradeep Kumar Bhagat for Doda West.

Congress and National Conference Finalize Seat-Sharing Agreement

This announcement follows the finalization of a seat-sharing agreement between Congress and its ally, the National Conference (NC). Under this agreement, the NC will contest 51 seats, while Congress will contest 32. Additionally, one seat each has been allocated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP). The two parties have also agreed to a “friendly contest” on five seats.

Election Schedule and Political Landscape

The J&K Assembly elections, mandated by the Supreme Court to be held by September 30, 2024, will take place in three phases, starting from September 18 and concluding on October 1. The first phase will cover 24 Assembly constituencies across six districts, with voting scheduled for September 18 and vote counting set for October 4. Earlier on Monday, the National Conference released its first list of 18 candidates, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) updated its list of 15 candidates for the first phase of voting in the Union Territory.

The release of Congress’s candidate list is a strategic move aimed at solidifying its position in the upcoming elections, as the party, alongside the NC, seeks to counter the BJP’s influence in the region. AICC General Secretary KC Venugopal has played a key role in the finalization of this seat-sharing agreement and the overall election strategy.

This election is poised to be a significant event in Jammu and Kashmir’s political landscape, with major parties like Congress, NC, and BJP vying for influence in the region.
