Congress-JMM-RJD Alliance and Seat Division

The alliance for the coming elections in Jharkhand is a close collaboration between Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and Congress and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). In this coalition, the JMM and Congress will contest 70 out of the 81 seats. Six seats will be retained by the RJD, and the remaining one seat along with the Left parties will have the right to contest the remaining 11. As part of the understanding, Congress has decided to contest 29 seats, lesser than the last election since considerable negotiations are on among allies.

This alliance will aim to repeat the success story of 2019, where the UPA under the banner of JMM had notched up majority with 47 seats while the BJP had won 25 seats. The Congress aims to use its candidates’ strength alongside synergy in the alliance to get a better mandate in 2024.

 BJP Strategies and Declared Candidates

Meanwhile, the BJP also unveiled its first list of 66 candidates. BJP key candidates include state party president Babulal Marandi contesting from Dhanwar and former Chief Minister Champai Soren contesting from Saraikella. In an attempt to regain power, the BJP has aligned with smaller regional parties such as the All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU), Janata Dal (United) (JD-U), and Lok Janshakti Party (LJP).

The BJP is likely to contest on all 68 seats, with all its allies fielding candidates in the remaining 13 seats. Governance, development, and national issues will certainly find their way into the party’s campaign agenda to regain control of the Jharkhand assembly.

Star campaigners of JMM and election timeline

The JMM has disclosed its list of star campaigners, with party founder Shibu Soren leading the pack. Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Nalin Soren, and Kalpana Murmu Soren, among others are also among those setting out to campaign but, again mainly to reinforce the tribal vote and other rural constituencies.

The Jharkhand assembly election will be held in two phases on November 13 and 20, 2024. The results will be declared on November 23. Now that the Congress has declared its candidates, the contest is on course to become neck-to-neck between the JMM-Congress-RJD alliance and the BJP-led alliance, where both opponents are vying for Jharkhand’s political prominence.

The Congress on Monday released its first list of 21 candidates for the assembly elections in Jharkhand, initiating a well-prepared battle for the post-election politics. The list contains the faces of Rameshwar Oraon, Ajoy Kumar, and Banna Gupta, among others. With these prominent leaders in the fray, the party is looking to consolidate its position within the alliance and challenge BJP’s bid to regain power. As the alliances are forged and the campaigns get hotter, all eyes would be on Jharkhand when it goes to the polls in November 2024.
