Guru Purnima 2024: Time and Shubh Muhurat

According to Drik Panchang, the Purnima Tithi (full moon) will start at 5:59 PM on July 20 and will end at 3:46 PM on July 21. Guru Purnima is also referred to as Vyasa Purnima, observed on the birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa, the revered author and character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Veda Vyasa is honored for his monumental contributions to Indian literature and spirituality, making Guru Purnima a significant day to express gratitude to all gurus.

Guru Purnima 2024: Rituals

Hindu Traditions

On Guru Purnima, Hindus wake up early and offer puja (worship) to their Maha Guru. The day starts with the recitation of the Maha Gita, remembering the teachings and wisdom imparted by the gurus. Rituals include offering flowers, gifts, prasad (sacred food), and charanamritha (holy water used to wash the feet of the guru). Ashrams dedicated to Veda Vyasa observe the day with special sandalwood pujas, celebrating his life and teachings.

Buddhist Traditions

In Buddhism, Guru Purnima holds a special place as it marks the day Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon to his five disciples in Sarnath, forming the Sangha or community of disciples. This event is known as the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, or the ‘Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dharma.’ Buddhists celebrate this day by remembering Buddha’s teachings and dedicating themselves to following the path of Dharma.
