Central Bureau of Investigation arrested Sandip Ghosh, ex-principal of R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on charges of allegedly being involved in the Kolkata Rape-Murder Case and financial mismanagement of the medical institution. The arrest comes in continuation of the investigation into the rape and brutal murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at the hospital, which has caused countrywide outrage in West Bengal. Ghosh, along with three others, is seriously accused of some serious charges regarding financial irregularities during his tenure as principal.
Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: Principal RG Kar Hospital Arrested
Sandip Ghosh, principal of RG Kar Medical College from February 2021 to September 2023, was arrested by the CBI after being grilled for over two weeks. His arrest is linked not only to the financial misconduct at the hospital but also to the investigation into the horrific rape and murder of a trainee doctor in August. The CBI, through its investigation, discovered links between Ghosh and the monetary malpractices and arrested him on various charges, which included criminal conspiracy, cheating, and dishonesty, among others, along with Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
CBI Probe into Financial Misconduct at RG Kar Medical College
Akhtar Ali, former Deputy Superintendent of the hospital, was the first complainant who reported financial anomalies at RG Kar Medical College, accusing gigantic corruption by Sandip Ghosh and others. CBI arrested three more persons – Biplav Singha, Suman Hazra, and Afsar Ali Khan in connection with the case. Afsar Ali Khan, reportedly Ghosh’s bodyguard, was booked on charges of threatening the hospital staff and selling off bio-medical waste from the hospital.
Kolkata Rape and Murder Case: Investigation on A horrific case of rape and murder occurred on August 9, 2023, when a 31-year-old doctor in training at RG Kar Medical College was brutally raped and murdered. The semi-naked body of the doctor lay in a seminar hall that led to the arrest of one Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police. The case has grabbed much headlines, and with an order from the Calcutta High Court, the CBI is taking over the case, replacing the Kolkata Police SIT that was investigating the case.
Mired in Controversy: Sandip Ghosh Returns and is Suspended
Despite his transfer in October 2023, Sandip Ghosh returned to the post within a month and continued to lead RG Kar Medical College up to the day of the horrific incident. Many had questioned that comeback then. Following the heinous event, the Indian Medical Association suspended his membership after its disciplinary committee reviewed the circumstances related to the rape and murder of the trainee doctor.
The CBI arrest of Sandip Ghosh has increased the pace in probe investigation both in the financial misdealings at RG Kar Medical College and the tragic Kolkata Rape-Murder Case. As the case unravels, it remains a sting operation on deep-seated institutional ills, with the arrest of Ghosh being a strong development in the ongoing probe.
