Badlapur Rape Case: Akshay Shinde's Mother's Allegations and Controversy Around Police Encounter

On September 23, the accused in the Badlapur sexual assault case, Akshay Shinde, was taken from Taloja jail to Badlapur by policemen for further investigation. He allegedly snatched the policemen’s gun and fired at them when they were transporting him, injuring the assistant police inspector. The police retaliated, leading to the death of Shinde. He was pronounced dead when he was taken to Kalwa Civil Hospital.

However, his mother and other family members fiercely oppose the police claims. His mother says her son would have never been capable of such acts and had appeared distressed inside the custody. She states that he has been beaten by the police and had sent a message to his family, stating that he needed money- probably a kind of bribe. How could he have snatched a gun and fired at the police?” She further alleged that Shinde had been compelled to write something before his death, pointing fingers at those responsible for his care.

The death of Akshay Shinde has snowballed into a political storm in Maharashtra with the opposition demanding an inquiry into the incident. Many politicians and activists are questioning the sequence of events and whether proper procedures were followed in what is being termed a suspicious custodial death.
